Getting Started On Board Game Arena
I joined the site in October 2016, but only recently started actively playing games on it (thanks to a certain pandemic). I have really been enjoying the games on there and I can highly recommend it to anyone that asks. It is also one of the best choices for the turn-based play style. Sometimes we just don’t have the time to sit and play the whole game in one sitting.
Below is a step by step guide for signing up.
1. Click here to sign up
After clicking the above link, you should see a screen that looks similar to the below picture.
Click “Start playing now“.
2. Create an account
You have three options to create your account on the create an account screen. You can either enter your details and click start playing now, or you can create your account by using your existing Facebook or Google account. Use whichever suits you best. For the sake of this demonstration, I have entered in new details. Click “start playing now“.
3. Confirm email
On the next screen, it asks you to click on the link provided in the email that would have just been sent to you via Board Game Arena. It will have the subject of “We are pleased to have you onboard”. I would recommend doing this as it opens up features on your account. There is also a quick “not a robot” check that you might run into. If done correctly, the message in the red text box in the image above should disappear.
4. Select up to 5 games you already know
Do the optional but recommended step of selecting 5 board games you already know. This helps the site suggest games you might like from the 200+ games they have to choose from. I have chosen 7 Wonders Duel, Stone Age, 7 Wonders, Puerto Rico, and Yahtzee (a good one just to get used to the user interface).
You will notice that the top message now shows the “I’m done!” button after making your game selections. Click “I’m done!”.
5. Play tutorial
Lastly, click on “Let’s play Can’t Stop now!”. This will have you play against a computer player and help you learn how to play on the site After completing the tutorial I recommend starting with either Yahtzee or Can’t Stop for your further games against real opponents.
Play Your First Turn-Based Game
1. Set your game settings
Click “Play Now” as seen in the picture above. My recommendation for your first game with real opponents would be; simple game, turn-based, and automatic, as seen above. Play a game you are familiar with or alternatively go with Yahtzee or Can’t Stop.
2. Click play now and wait for that sweet game
Once you make a selection and click “play now” for that game you will see the image above. This will start searching for opponents and show you the estimated time to find opponents.
3. Get your game on!
And finally…you can start playing your game and enjoy the smell of that sweet sweet cardboard…oh wait. Well, this will do for now, and it is still a blast. Each game has its own way to play, but the on-screen prompts are quite intuitive. Have fun!
