Vikings The Board Game – The Best Medieval Strategy Game
Intro To Vikings The Board Game
Description
Vikings the board game is a fast economic game. Despite the nominal “Viking” theme, no actual exploration or pillaging is involved. The resources in the game consist of coins and several types of ship tiles, island tiles and meeples. In each of 6 rounds, a random set of 12 tiles and 12 meeples becomes available. Players take turns buying and placing pairs of meeples and tiles. There is no direct player interaction, only indirect contention for resources during the buying phase. The most unusual aspect of the game is the pricing wheel, which pairs meeples with tiles and sets their prices.

Vikings The Board Game – Play Session Report
I was meant to play this game at the recommended three-player count. Our lockdown rules changed the evening before so one of the players had to pull out. I had already learned the rules so decided to play the game with my girlfriend. It turned out to be a good game still. Even at two players, you can still take the tiles and Vikings before the other person can get them.
The setup and learning of the game were very quick. I had it set up and ready to teach in about 20 minutes. My girlfriend got home from work and we were playing within 10 minutes. There were one or two rules clarifications, but that is about normal for any lightweight game.
Midway through the game, things were looking pretty even score-wise. My girlfriend had a much easier time than I did with the placing of tiles. I can’t imagine discarding tiles owing to not being able to place them is a good thing. This happened to me twice!
At this point in the game, you start realizing that sometimes you want to place a tile without a Viking on it. This can be really important later when needing your black warrior Vikings to block the ships. You want to create an empty island space so that your boatsmen can drop warriors off there. Keep in mind that perfect placement will not always be available. Losing the scoring of a whole column can be quite devastating.
There were 15 points in it after the final scoring. Keep in mind that we went around the scoring track once each. I would say those bonuses in the end game scoring are very important. My girlfriend sealed her victory by having the most completed islands and the largest island. We both really enjoyed the game and want to get it to the table again very soon. This game can even be played during a lunch break once all players know how to play. This is a genuine keeper in my collection.
